Buttermilk Bend Trail, Penn Valley

Looking for a new hiking trail for your next family adventure? The Buttermilk Bend Trail is located in the South Yuba River State Park and will offer stunning views as you walk above the river.

The trail is just over 2 miles (out & back) and is great for hikers of all ages and abilities. A single jogging stroller would fair well on this trail as well and don’t forget your four legged friend. Pups are welcome as long as they are leashed.

This trail has some shade but most of the time you are walking in the sun with little shade so don’t forget sunscreen, hats, glasses, and LOTS of water. There are also 4 or 5 trails leading down to the water so you can take a swim. The first few are pretty steep so if you can hike down past the waterfall there are a few paths that have fairly easy access to the water.

We have hiked this trail a few times. In the spring the trail is more busy with lots of wildflowers and a full waterfall in addition to the river views. Like many of the trails in the area there are less flowers for viewing and higher chances of the waterfalls being dried up in the late summer and early fall. However, this hike really is great year round.

This hike makes for a great day trip from Sacramento. You can spend the day hiking and exploring the visitor center that tells you all about the animals and wildflowers in the area along with the history of the covered bridge that is currently being restored. Lots of California history to explore after your hike and perhaps a picnic lunch!

Parking is $5 in the lot or free with a California State Park Pass. There is a small lot outside of the pay lot for free parking.

Have a wonderful day hike and be sure to let us know what you think!

Cheers,

The Curious Crew
